Disabilities and Children's Services Statement
Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Children's Services, the Hon Bill Shorten, MP
13 May 2008Hi, I'm Bill Shorten, Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Children's Services.
One of the great things about being Australian is our 'fair go' spirit.
We all agree that everyone deserves an old fashioned fair go. This is why I am proud that the Budget has important measures for two vulnerable groups of our community.
The Government will develop a National Disability Strategy aimed at improving economic participation, social inclusion and wellbeing for people with disability, their families and carers.
The strategy will provide direction for disability legislation, policy and standards. It will set out practical action plans for service delivery and quality assurance.
For example, it will include a common accessible parking scheme so there are more available parking options for people with disability and their carers.
We will also be meeting an election commitment by working with states, territories and the community sector on a new national framework for protecting Australia's children.
Unfortunately there are more cases of child abuse and neglect than ever before. The Government is determined to play a leadership role in keeping children safe.
You can find more detail about the Government's Budget measures on this website or at www.budget.gov.au
Thanks and bye for now.
